Choosing a Gift : A Quick Guide

  • 21/06/201723/06/2017

Everyone loves receiving a gift – right? And some people even love giving a gift – honest! But what about choosing a gift?

Well here are some tips for finding the right jewellery gift from Wryght Designs.

There are a few main considerations that you need to establish first : budget, timeframe and general category.
There’s little point finding the perfect diamond laden stud earrings made in rural Scotland if you need the gift in three days, your budget is $50 or your giftee doesn’t have pierced ears.

Once you’ve got that sorted and decided to buy jewellery, it’s time to think specifics.

Jewellery type : think about what type of jewellery she wears most often ; earrings, necklaces or bracelets? Also does she has a large variety or wear the same item everyday? I know women who wear the same necklace everyday but change up their earrings, and others who wear two pairs on earrings on rotation but different necklaces everyday.

Shape : circles are generally picked by women who love classic and elegant styles, diamonds for a modern and smart look, squares highlight edgy and alternative vibes whereas rectangles and bars are favoured for a casual and relaxed feel.

Necklace length : jump over to the blog post dedicated to helping choose a necklace length.

Metal : hop over to the blog post to help you pick between silver, copper and brass or download the one page gift guide infographic here.

Good luck and remember that Wryght Designs’ jewellery comes with a 14 day happiness guarantee for all unworn jewellery.

Necklace Lengths : A Helpful Guide

Choosing a necklace length can seem daunting so here is a quick run down to help you make the right choice.

The main considerations are physique, fashion style and clothing.

Physique

  • Shorter necklaces emphasise the neck and upper torso area making them best suited for slim necks. They also suit petite women by drawing attention upwards towards the face.
  • Medium length necklaces flatter all body shapes, they balance the neck and bust and are the best all round choice.
  • Longer necklaces elongate and draw attention downwards and towards the bust, they flatter most shapes but particularly suit taller women.

Fashion Style

Individual style has a lot to do with choosing jewellery and necklace length. Some ideas includes :

  • Preppy, corporate, think paired back colours, collared shirts and blouses : work best with shorter necklaces pairing well with those mid-height necklines.
  • Retro, vintage, think boat, square and bust level necklines : work best with shorter necklaces to balance those bust emphasising necklines.
  • Boho, hippy, casual think floaty tops, spaghetti straps and florals : work best with long necklaces chains particularly suitable for necklace layering.

Item of Clothing

Finally pairing jewellery and necklace lengths with clothing can really pull an outfit together. There are a few key rules to consider.

Necklace length and necklines, generally necklaces should sit at least an inch (2.5cm) above or below the neckline, within an inch and you risk the necklace hiding inside the neckline or clashing with the clothing.

  • Low necklines need short or medium necklaces for example plunging v-necks dresses and strapless tops.
  • Medium necklines need short or long necklaces for example button down shirts and scooped necklines.
  • High necklines need medium or longer necklaces for example turtle necks and round crew neck t-shirts

As standard Wryght Designs’ stock sterling silver 40cm, 55cm and 70cm chains. These can be purchased as a additional item in the shop. However, if you are looking for a specific length please ask, we keep a limited stock of other lengths including 45cm, 50cm and 60cm. We are also able to source surgical stainless steel and gold necklaces on request.

Choosing a Jewellery Metal : A Quick Guide

Struggling to pick which colour metal jewellery you should buy? Then here is a quick guide to help you decide and snag a new favourite piece to compliment your wardrobe.

There are three mains considerations for choosing a jewellery metal : skin tone, wardrobe colours and other jewellery.

Skin tone

Just like certain clothes colours look good on certain skin tones, particular metals also look good on particular skin tones.

  • Cool skin tones : tend to be complimented by cooler metal colours like silver, white gold and platinum.
  • Warm skin tones : tend to be complimented by warmer metal colours like brass, copper and yellow and rose golds.
  • Neutral skin tones : have the benefit of looking great in both cool and warm metal colours aka free range on all metals.

Wardrobe colours

Choosing a specific metal for jewellery can be a great way to compliment or contrast the main colours in your wardrobe.

  • Black, white and grey : for contrast consider adding copper or brass, for subtlety add a splash of silver.
  • Green, blue and purple : silver and brass will tend to compliment these hues where copper will add contrast.
  • Red, yellow and orange : be aware that copper and brass that might clash tonally, add silver for a guaranteed complimentary dash.

Other Jewellery

Some women have a favourite jewellery metal, consistently seen in the matching jewellery metals, normally either gold or silver. Other women will mix their metals but this is normally a minority, though mixing is becoming more popular.

  • Gold lovers : an addition of brass will fit nicely with other golden items without the hefty price tag.
  • Silver lovers : obviously a purchase of silver will be loved.
  • Rose gold lovers : an addition of silver or copper will compliment this trend for rose gold.
  • Mixed metals lover or unsure : a splash of copper is most likely to please.

The above guide should help you choose a jewellery metals, but if you are wild at heart, or even just a little bit daring, adding a mixture of jewellery metals to match your daily mood or outfit of the day.
